Subject Matter Advisor – Handicraft/Handloom

Location: Chamba Block, Himachal Pradesh

Employment Type: Part time (5-8 days per month depending on the scope of work and services

offered)

Job Summary:

We are seeking a knowledgeable and passionate Subject Matter Advisor with a background in

handicrafts and handloom to support the training and technique enhancement of traditional

handicraft products such as Chamba rumal, Kullu shawl and cap, metal/wood craft, and other

handloom products. The advisor will provide training and capacity-building workshops for

artisans, develop curricula, and advise on product designing of existing art forms. Additionally,

the advisor will assist in market linkage and promotion of handcrafted products.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Training and Technique Enhancement:

○ Provide training to local artisans to enhance their skills in traditional handicraft

techniques.

○ Conduct capacity-building workshops aimed at improving the productivity and quality of

artisans’ work.

 

  1. Curriculum Development and Product Designing:

○ Develop comprehensive curricula that address the needs of artisans and promote the

sustainability of traditional art forms.

○ Advise on the design of new products that respect traditional aesthetics while appealing

to modern markets.

 

  1. Design Development and Product Diversification:

○ Encourage product diversification to expand market opportunities for artisans.

○ Provide guidance on developing new designs to keep traditional crafts relevant and

marketable.

 

  1. Market Linkage and Promotion:

○ Assist in establishing market linkages to connect artisans with broader markets.

○ Promote handcrafted products through various channels, including exhibitions, online

platforms, and collaborations with retailers.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Design, Handicrafts, or a related field. A Master’s degree is

preferred.

  • Proven experience in the handicraft/handloom sector, with a focus on traditional products.
  • Strong knowledge of traditional handicraft techniques and cultural heritage.
  • Excellent training and workshop facilitation skills.
  • Ability to develop curricula and advise on product design.
  • Experience in market linkage and product promotion.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • 6-7 years of experience in the handicraft/handloom sector is preferred.

Location and Travel:

  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
  • Familiarity with the local region (Chamba Block) and understanding of its specific challenges and

opportunities is highly desirable.
