Men's Day

Encouraging Positive Male Role Models by uplifting men’s well-being

To the men of the hour…

In the mosaic of human history, men have often been cast in roles of unwavering strength: warriors, protectors, and providers, carrying an unspoken expectation of safeguarding their kin and kind. Yet, the world today seeks to unravel this narrow lens, recognizing that true strength also means vulnerability, openness, and resilience in the face of adversity. Celebrated each year on November 19, this day is a call to reframe the narrative, spotlighting men who champion mental wellness, balance expectations, and break free from archaic moulds. Addressing men’s mental and physical health needs is essential, not only for men but for the healthier society where their well-being is cherished. Through these positive role models, we hope to inspire men everywhere to redefine what it means to be “strong,” creating a ripple effect of acceptance and support that transcends generational boundaries. This International Men’s Day, as we honour the theme of “Positive Male Role Models, we celebrate the men who lead by example, reminding us that masculinity is, at its core, as boundless and evolving as those who embody it.

Establishing the Funda‘men’tals- History of International Men’s Day

In 1999, a vision emerged that would redefine global perceptions of masculinity, bringing into the spotlight the often-overlooked struggles that men face. Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, with a resolute commitment to change, established the first International Men’s Day (IMD) in Trinidad and Tobago. What commenced as a singular effort to recognize the complex and multifaceted challenges men encounter has blossomed into a worldwide movement, now celebrated in over 90 countries, marking International Men’s Day history. This initiative, born of one man’s sense of responsibility, has since grown to illuminate the pathways through which other men could confront, reflect upon, and overcome societal constraints on their well-being.

The need for a dedicated day for men becomes clear when we acknowledge the weight of societal expectations they carry. Celebrating International Men’s Day is not just about raising awareness; it’s about creating a world where men are free to thrive in all aspects of life. By celebrating positive male role models, both well-known figures and everyday heroes, and prioritizing their mental, emotional, and physical health, IMD encourages a shift in how men are viewed and how they view themselves.

Ashray Foundation’s Initiatives in Uplifting Men’s Health and Mental Well-Being

At Ashray Foundation, we believe that being men’s health champions and nurturing their mental well-being is not just about addressing challenges but about shaping role models who inspire change. We’ve seen first-hand how stigmas around mental health and the devastating grip of substance abuse can hold men back. Such adversities inspire us to work tirelessly to create safe spaces for open conversations, offer counselling, and raise awareness through targeted initiatives, creating a culture of inclusivity beyond all biases.

In Rahdhi, Mandi, where 40% of the male community was grappling with tobacco addiction, our Team Sanjeevani stood by them, addressing their health concerns and encouraging healthier choices, taking a small step towards well-being sparks a ripple of change. Our journey goes beyond physical and mental health; it’s about building a footing of strength and empowerment. Through health screenings, workshops, and collaborations with community groups, we equip men from rural areas with tools for self-reliance, from vocational training to financial literacy. Campaigns like “NASHA CHODO, HOGI AZAADI” remind us that breaking free from addiction is a collective victory that fosters hope and opportunity for individuals and their communities.

This multidimensional approach reflects Ashray Foundation’s vision of redefining the bonds of brotherhood through health and social equity. As Edwin Markham aptly states, “the crest and crowning of all good, life’s final star,” we assert that true strength lies in creating an environment where men can thrive as role models for future generations by nurturing resilience, self-discipline, and community engagement, and a legacy of health, progress, and positive influence.

A‘men’ to men’s well-being- Celebrating the men around us

As the sun sets on International Men’s Day 2024, we are left with more than just the echoes of celebration but with a collective responsibility on our shoulders. Rudyard Kipling’s immortal lines remind us of what it truly means to be a man: to weather storms without losing tenderness, to stride alongside kings while holding the hands of the forgotten, to rise above adversities with a heart that beats for others. It is in these quiet acts of grace and unyielding courage that men shape their legacy, not as mere individuals but as positive male role models for a world yearning for strength tempered with compassion.

Let this day be more than commemoration, but a charge to each of us to nurture the health and well-being of men in our communities. Through steadfast advocacy, open conversations, and unwavering support, we can shape a world where every man feels valued and empowered to thrive, writing an optimistic narrative about International Men’s Day. At Ashray Foundation, we walk this path with unshaken resolve, carrying stories of resilience and redemption as torches to light the way. For in every person we uplift, we build a world that thrives on understanding and unity, building a world where the Earth and everything in it truly belongs to those who dare to love, heal, and inspire.
